I had to stop taking this medication since my legs became terribly swollen. I had been taking it for a while, and then when I developed this condition, I read somewhere that it was caused by Amlodipine. I am taking something else now, and my doctor has categorized me as being allergic to Amlodipine.

These drug companies and the doctors that prescribe them are more into the money they make from these meds and could care less about their patients. They never seem to know the answers to questions like yours.

Norvasc or Amlodipine are the only drugs that controls my blood pressure at
reasonable levels. I am 75 years old and have had high blood pressure since I was checked at 12 years of age. I had some serious heart enlargement in my twenties but luckily diuretics were available and they reduced my blood pressure to a lower level but still on the high side.....perhaps saving my life. Norvasc works well for me with some side effects.

was taking amlodipine(norvasc} for couple of months-10 mg.with accupril and metoprolol.legs began swelling-only worsened-feetand ankles reddened.legs hurt.could not wear my shoes after standing or walking awile. stopped amlodipine but nothing hasreturned to normal yet-has been two weeks.Dr. is aware.

I had somewhat the same problem and the Dr. prescribed Furosemide (Lasix) and it went down and was gone in about 4 days. So you might ask your Dr. about it. I wish you luck.

After a couple of months on Azor, a combination of Amlodipine and another drug, the doctor changed the med to a lower dose of Amlodipine and Diovan. I continued to have feet that looked like the Hulk!! So I'm back on Diovan as well as Medopropanol. I still have some edema, but my blood pressure is back down in the 130 range, not the 188 after the sudden loss of my Husband, just before Christmas.

I am an almost 75 male. was 5ft 9" tall 250 lb ,but yrs of motorcycle rideing & 2 broken necks & fuseions im 5ft 7" now 165lb. 2010 wasnt a good year for me physically. I was diagnosed with stage 3 prostrate cancer & recd. 42 hi dose radeation treatments.Jan.2012 hopefully i will still be cancer free, when i get my last hormone shot. Then on Oct 1st i was at work when my aortic valve gave out, i fell thru a table, cut 5 arteries imy head, didnt know a person could bleed that much from his head. Anyway i then recd a pig valve at Duke univ. I teel all this as it relates to my use of Amlodipine besylate. I was takeing 1 10mg Amlodipine & one 40mg Quinaril/day before the valve repair & functioning pretty good(was able to keep up at work without tireing quickly) Now im takeing 2.5mg Amlodipine & 20mg Quinapril . My bp some times gets very low(50/40) I tire easly & have lost a lot of strength.Im eating healthy, broiled fish & chicken , steamed vegs & Gn. tea. My question is do i need to change my bp meds?

Your blood pressure is dangerously low with 50/40. I find it hard to believe that you can function with that reading. I would hightail it to the doc and maybe get off the medicine for awhile. Even though high blood pressure is bad, real low blood pressure can be bad, too, because the oxygen does not get to the heart fast enough and people can faint or get real dizzy. Don't wait, get to the doc.

Amlodipine makes me retain a lot of fluid in my legs.

57 – MediGuard

I retain fluid sometimes to. They gave me a water pill, hydrochlorothiazide to release that fluid and it works.

Developed red and sore gums after taking amlodapine over 2 yrs. Dr. is changing this med. with diovan. Pharmacy said the sore gums was common with amlodapine.

77 – MediGuard

to finish my comment....my kidney function decreased from 1.0 to 1.6 in these two years. I have been off Diovan for 6 months and my kidney function has improved to 1.2 and hopefully will continue.

I had no idea there was a connection between Amlodipine and sore gums. I live with chronic pain (Fibro) and just assumed the sore gums were part of the Fibro pain. Thanks for sharing your comment. (I will speak with my doctor concerning this soon.)

My doc prescribed Amlodipine after Lisinopril (cough) and Micardis (didn't control my blood pressure). Hasn't caused weight gain that I'm aware of but did cause need to urinate at night and rapid heart rate. The rapid heart rate seems to have improved. I take my med just before bed. I've recently been having low backache and joint discomfort. could this be a side effect of the medication?

62 – MediGuard

I have been on Amlodipine 10mg now for some 4 years and to date and suffered no side effects what so ever.

I have been taking Amlodipine 5mg. on and off for several years and I have pain in my buttocks and legs everyday. It bothers me mostly at night and in the mornings. I also have edema in my feet and legs, it's worse in my right foot, but I blame it on the foot surgery I had in the summer of 2009. I also take Carvedilol 12.5 mg and Synthroid 125 mcg cut in half.
My doctor blames the leg pain and buttocks pain on my back, but why doesn't it last all day? Now after reading all of these other complaints I think it may be the Amlodipine.

I just don't feel as well in the morning after taking meds, since I've been on amlodipine and I get a lot of muscle cramps. However, if I increase the potassium the muscle cramps go away. I feel better in the evening when the meds have mostly lost their effect. I tried eliminating the amlodipine one day, but the following day the blood pressure did go up higher, so I need it, apparently. I was wondering if perhaps it's the dosage or maybe a different calcium channel blocker would be better. However, I'm given generics mostly since I'm on medicare.

Since taking amlodipine I don't feel as well in the morning as in the evening after all my meds have more or less worn off. I also get muscle cramps, but these are mostly gone after taking more potassium. I wondered if perhaps I didn't need the calcium channel blocker and tried going without it one day, but the blood pressure got higher the next day so apparently I need it. Then I wondered if perhaps the dosage was a little too high or perhaps a different calcium channel blocker might work better on me.

63 years too. I have pain in my buttocks and lets also but thought it was sciatica caused from a bulging disc. I had no idea that this could be caused from amlodopine. My legs are increasingly weak and painful. How does one separate one cause from another? This is crazy-making.

70 – MediGuard

Suggest you have your physician order a cat-scan of your back to identify any physical reasoning for the pain. You were right in thinking that sciatica may be culprit. If it is then consider steriod injections or other means to relieve pain. If nothing shows on scan it probably is the amlodipine.

My daughter in law had bulging disc and her MD sent her to a chiropractor and he had helped he tremendously. She went from using a cane to crutches and now can walk without either She had 3 bulging discs and one deteriorating disc. She does not take amlodopine although I DO and have had nome of the symptoms mentioned in any of these articles. What affects one may not another

79 – MediGuard

Has your leg and buttock pain been diagnosed as Sciatica? My daughter-in-law had same pain and when her MD didn't know what else to do for her he sent her to a Chiropractor and he has made a great difference in her life. She no longer had the bad pain she has been experiencing.

Are there any potentially dangerous side effects from taking papaya enzyme chewable tablets with daily 10 mg. Amlodipine?

56 – MediGuard

I am a 72 yr old male. My previous doctor prescribed 5mgs. which was fine. Then my new doctor prescribed 10mgs which I got swelling in my foot. This doctor went back to 5mgs. and I am okay. My Atenolol was stopped since I am taking Amlodipine. I take Amlodipine 5mgs with 81 mgs Aspirin until at present time. I only take Ranitidine as needed and this works fine too. Same as Ibuprofen which I take as needed for my backpain.

i take papaya enzyme with no adverse side effects
